Some Facts about Octopus and its Habitat

OctopusOctopus generally lives on the ocean bed. Its common habitat is the cracks and crevices of the ocean rocks. Its habitat largely depends on its type. Most of the octopuses live in temperate ocean waters but the Giant Pacific octopuses make their homes in the Northern Pacific Ocean. There are some varieties of octopus which spend some part of their lives at the surface layer of the open ocean. Highest concentration of octopuses are found in coastal areas, reef areas and benthic.

Octopuses are cephalopods and they are totally boneless creatures. Its body is extremely flexible and it can squeeze its body into the smallest nooks and crannies to avoid any predator attack. Octopuses are nesting creatures. They sometimes dig hole in the sand to develop a den. They make their home in such a way that it provides a hiding place from their predators and at the same time the female octopus lays and incubates its eggs there. The amazing thing is that in order to disguise its den octopus gathers shells from crustaceans or small rocks and make up a fortress around the opening.

Some of the predators of octopus are sharks, moray eel and dolphins. Octopus can change its color and take color of the nearby surface to save her from the attack of the predators. If it is attacked by the predator, instantly it emits a black ink which dims sensory perception of the predator for some time and meanwhile the octopus can escape.
